Crowd Safety - some issues

If ever a picture said a thousand word this one certainly does - how often do we all get lulled into that false sense of security in a dense crowd? I think we all do it or have done it. But do have a think about this:

Paul Wertheimer (Crowdsafe® 2003) quotes Mick Upton from his paper "Crowd Management and Risk Assessment on the dangers people may face in the pit"

"Pit teams must be trained to extract people from the crowd within 3 minutes if serious incidents are to be avoided"

Paul Wertheimer then goes on to say "What is Mr Upton telling ? He is telling us something very scary, something that the average concert goer does not comprehend. In an extreme crowd crush situation, ones chances of surviving without injury, if at all, may be determined in a matter of 180 seconds" - that's a pretty subduing point isn't it?

Given the general free for all for those coveted front of stage places this is a serious issue - and one that currently isn't being addressed properly by any of us.
