If you only ever go to one festival we recommend you make it this one...

What can you say about the Glastonbury festival that hasn't already been said ad infinitum eh? For many of its devotees it is THE festival, the one that all have tried to emulate but no-one has ever quite managed to capture that certain indefinable ingredient that makes it something special, different, magical and unbeatable. It is undoubtedly the most diverse, biggest and best festival anywhere - set in over 1,000 acres of mystical land that's steeped in history and symbolism. You'll be sure to get a warm welcome at Glastonbury - it's a whole different world of wonders.

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and put quite simply nothing out there beats it, it's a truly astonishing festival and once you're there you are in a completely different world. Once you're in this world you'll soon see that it's a bit like being in a different city completely - there's the main commercial centre with loads of outreach towns and communities surrounding it.

There's the ever busy bustling and hip metropolis which houses the infamous Pyramid Stage, a little hop, skip and a jump and you'll find The Other Stage and The Dance Stages, always bursting with raw energy and ever busy - this area of the festival is a heaving mass of excitement and anticipation, always alive and kicking.

If you fancy something a tad more on the chilled out side, take a stroll to the Jazzworld and Acoustic areas and you'll find yourself in a totally different town on the outskirts of the city! Oodles to do, lots to see and experience but quite different from the bustling city scene - take your time here and relax.

Zip on down to the family oriented areas with the kids to experience something different, the Kidz Field will keep the youngsters amused and happy for hours while the Theatre and Circus fields are great for the whole family to share.

For a more alternative experience get yourself over to the Field of Avalon, the Tipi Field, and the Green Fields - so much going on but yet again a completely different festival experience on offer.

Feeling spiritual? right at the top of the site is the Sacred Space - this is really special and embraces celebration and ceremony, celebrate life and joy with many other festival revelers here - the Stone Circle is a glorious sight to behold!

A Bit Of History

There is some debate about which was the first ever Glastonbury because there was a one day event in September 1970, but for many of us, and certainly for those of us who were there, the real start of the Glastonbury magic has to be the 20th - 24th June 1971, a memorable and amazing 'happening' where the infamous pyramid stage was born! (of course it was nothing like the sophisticated structure you see today!)
From a rainy start the weather came out to play to the strains of George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" and we never looked back. It was all free and would have gone on much longer but for the fact that the council were determined to close it down, many threats of injunctions were made but we all stood firm, this was OUR festival and we were having it large, not only that but we certainly didn't want it to end. Of course the powers that be finally won and like all good things it ended, no-one there could convince the authorities that the bunch of hippies who had invaded Somerset weren't a major risk to society as they knew it.

Mind you - we hope Glastonbury always has, and always will be a 'risk to society' in that it will continue to promote awareness, change and challenge perceptions and to stand for all that is good in our society.

Although the 1971 festival was funded by Arabella Churchill (sadly now deceased) and Andrew Kerr, the full credit for the continuation of this legendary festival rests with Michael Eavis and his family, this is a man with a vision and a determination matched by few. Through the years, and at times when there has been determined efforts to see the end of Glastonbury festival, Michael Eavis has stood firm to his principles and to his belief in all that is Glastonbury and this is why it has evolved to become the phenomenon it is today, a festival like no other.

This is the festival that really does concentrate on good causes and has raised millions for charities both at home and abroad, a strong feature of the festival is its ability to raise awareness.

If you only ever go to one festival - it should be Glastonbury. The festival is what you make it and people have very different experiences here - what most have in common is that all who attend are touched by its magic - Glastonbury is steeped in history and has a magic all its own - it changes, grows and evolves all the time, but it's always ahead of the game and it will always be unique and special.
